The People Behind The Mural
Castletownbere Community Hospital
In the summer of 2023, residents of Castletownbere Community Hospital worked with artist Michael Greenlaw to create a beautiful map of Beara mural. Over the last year, musician Ecki Krupp collaborated with the residents to create The People Behind The Mural.
This short film brings to life the stories behind the painting, and connects the artwork to the people and locations that inspired it.
Interviewing the Residents
Over 7 interview sessions, Ecki heard the stories of the residents and their connections to each place mentioned in the mural. Each small elememt of the artwork has stories and memories attached to it. Residents spoke about growing up in Castletownbere, school days with the nuns, going to the shop to buy sweets, swimming and fishing for mackrel, and evenings at the local dance hall. The stories give a beautiful insight into life on the Beara Peninsula.
Visiting Each Location
Throughout the summer, Ecki travelled to each location mentioned in the resident’s stories. He filmed the buildings and found out their current uses. Through his filming, Ecki also captured the incredible beauty of the area.
Finalising the Film
Ecki brought the film together, including narration and musical accompaniment, over a number of editing sessions. The final film is displayed on a tablet beside the mural at Castletownbere Community Hospital. A local festival screened The People Behind The Mural in August 2025.
Timeframe
This project took place throughout 2024.
Testimonies
‘The connection between past and present, the earlier stories of the life of residents that has led them to where they are now, is the most important to me. And certainly the love for the place we live in.’ – Ecki Krupp
