Through the Window

Dunmanway Community Hospital

Through the Window aimed to engage participants at Dunmanway Community Hospital in creating a glass sculpture to brighten up the hospital’s outdoor space. In the final piece, participant’s individual glass panels came together to form one communal structure.

In April, visual artist Michael Greenlaw introduced the idea of creating a glass sculpture to the participants at Dunmanway Community Hospital. They created based on the theme of ‘birds in the garden,’ which encouraged lively discussions around bird species, songs, sayings, and poems.

Participants learned different techniques for working with glass; drawing and painting onto glass, and using smaller colourful pieces of glass to create designs in a mosaic style that would later be fused together in the kiln.

The final structure included birds, flower motifs, GAA county colours, and an extract from The Wren Song. It stands in the garden of Dunmanway Community Hospital.
