The Wise Trees

The Wise Trees project evolved during Arts for Health sessions at Castletownbere Community Hospital with artist Catherine Weld.

Last winter and through to early spring 2026, residents explored print making with winter leaves, and drawing in ink using brushes made from winter grasses. Participants chose from leaves brought in by Catherine, together with the colours they would like to use. The group experienced both monoprinting and gell plate printing, with some beautiful results.

Winter Trees

By William Carlos Williams

A liquid moon

moves gently among

the long branches.

Thus having prepared their buds

against a sure winter

the wise trees

stand sleeping in the cold.

In response to the poem above, Catherine and the group wondered about things they wish they had known when they were younger. They recognised the knowledge and experience a long life can bring, and honoured the wisdom of those present. Towards the end of the sessions, some of the prints were combined with sayings and thoughts that arose through the conversations, to be made into a small book, whilst other prints have been framed for the day room wall.

Bealtaine Festival

The Wise Trees is a wonderful addition to our Bealtaine celebrations this year. The Bealtaine Exhibition at Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre is running from 1 – 31 May. Call in to see a wonderful selection of Arts for Health projects from the last year.

Bealtaine at Uillinn reflects the relationships we have built with artists, older people and our health and education partners across West Cork. The work shared is the result of time, trust and creative conversation. At Uillinn, we believe creativity should be accessible to everyone. Bealtaine is a powerful reminder of what happens when people are given the space, support and encouragement to make art.
