Sound and Vision

What a fantastic opening weekend for Bealtaine at Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre!

Our Bealtaine Exhibition opened last Friday 1 May, and it’s looking wonderful. It’s always a special time of year when we see work from older people across West Cork come together in one space. This year’s exhibition showcases artworks developed through the Arts for Health Partnership Programme over the past year. Also included is a new selection of work from Arts for an Active Mind.

Sound and Vision is the new collection of work from Arts for an Active Mind participants working with artist Paul Cialis. Participants created through music and movement sessions. The work explores shared creative expression by translating classical music into abstract painting. With their eyes closed, participants allowed their hands to move freely across the canvas while listening to the musical pieces, letting sound guide the movement. These experimental drawings were later developed into paintings in each participant’s individual style, resulting in a series of distinctive and expressive works.

The pieces were made by Catherine O’Keefe, Kathleen Cleary, Eily May Connolly, Anne Hurley, June Collins, Finola Rowell, Kay O’Brien, Sadie Sweetman, Valerie Stevenson, Mary O Shea, Margaret Tallant Murphy, and Sheila Whooley.

What is Arts for an Active Mind?

Arts for an Active Mind is s a weekly art session that has taken place at Uillinn on Monday mornings since 2002. Anyone over 55 can join, as long as there’s room at the table. The group offers a relaxed and social approach to exploring visual art. Activities include: painting, printing and meeting artists in residence at Uillinn. The facilitating artists take a combined approach of demonstration and practical application to explore visual art techniques and contemporary practices.

Call in to see Sound and Vision at Uillinn WCAC, Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4.45pm. The Bealtaine Exhibtion is running from 1 to 31 May in the Stairwell and Corridor Galleries.

Arts for an Active Mind is a lifelong learning initiative supported by Cork Education and Training Board.
