Research Project: Music and Dementia

As we wrap up Bealtaine 2026, we have one more wonderful project to share with you!

Throughout 2025, musician and composer Justin Grounds undertook a research project focused on the connections between music and Dementia. His study and practice-based learning explored the many ways that music can be a beneficial activity for people with various forms of Dementia.

‘As a musician and composer who has worked in the field of arts and health for over a decade, and so had quite a lot of experience in making music with people with dementia (both in groups and individually) it has been really fascinating to be able to source and read some of the new clinical studies which have been made, and to really see how these research findings have been reflected so closely in my own practice. It’s really affirmed what I was already doing, and also really inspired and empowered me to keep extending my practice in this field, as it is such a powerful and beneficial activity for people with this condition.’

Justin sat down with Rinku Thomas, Clinical Nurse Manager at Clonakilty Community Hospital, Saoirse Ward. They chatted about the project and its potential benefits in the healthcare setting. You can read that conversation in full here.

In November 2025, Justin shared his findings with the Arts for Health artist team. We are delighted to share Justin’s presentation as an online video as part of our Bealtaine celebrations this year!

Bealtaine Festival

Bealtaine at Uillinn reflects the relationships we have built with artists, older people and our health and education partners across West Cork. The work shared is the result of time, trust and creative conversation. At Uillinn, we believe creativity should be accessible to everyone. Bealtaine is a powerful reminder of what happens when people are given the space, support and encouragement to make art.
