Week 5
For this week of the Museum of Song postal project, we invited residents in the participating hospitals to think about something a bit different. “We would love to know who you think has or had The Most Beautiful Voice! Perhaps this is someone in your family, your community or a singer you heard on the radio”. We included a postcard featuring some very young singers, words to the song ‘Bantry Bay’ which mentions “… the tender sound of song” and the poem ‘Spanish Song’ by Candelas from Bantry, written with Tess, about her father’s voice. (extract below)
Every house I have lived in has been full of song.
When I couldn’t sing, my children could.
Their voices fill me with joy…”
We were especially pleased with the responses sent to us in the post last week from participants on the theme ‘Songs of the Land’. Con in Dunmanway shared with us the song ‘The Road by the River’ which reminded him of going to the river with his father to catch salmon or trout and Fiona told us about her mother singing ‘The Hills of Donegal’ at home of an evening with neighbours and friends. Mary Margaret in Schull likes the image of the mountains sweeping down to the sea in the song ‘The Mountains of Mourne’ and ‘The Galtee Mountain Boy’ was suggested by Florence in Skibbereen:
“We roamed the Dublin Mountains as the sun was shining high,
Farewell to Tipperary, said the Galtee Mountain boy.”
