Catherine is a visual artist based in her studio near Bantry since 2012 and previously in Dorset, UK. Her creative career began as a social documentary photographer, followed by seven years as facilitator of a hospice-based project making books and films with people at the end of life. She then gained a First Class degree in Graphic Design before committing to life as a visual artist which offers the challenges to which she is temperamentally best suited.

Catherine works in a wide range of media with the use of colour a predominant interest. Her subject is primarily the landscape together with the physical properties of her materials, and searching for what is real through the process of abstraction. She is also interested in the human figure in a variety of contexts and has engaged in life drawing for many years. This has led to creative collaborations with bodywork practitioners coming from both art and health based backgrounds.

She has exhibited widely including at the RA Summer Show in London, the RUA in Belfast, and the Vue Art Fair, RHA, Dublin. Paintings are in the OPW and Cork County Council art collections as well as in private homes in Germany, Switzerland, the U.S.A., the U.K. and Ireland. In 2023 an Agility Award enabled her to develop her work under the mentorship of Aosdana member Eamon Colman. She also enjoys the challenges of exhibition curation and has been involved in several environmental campaigns through the arts.

“I believe that creative expression can be a means to increased well-being, and that my role is to enable participants to develop their creativity whilst feeling safe and supported. Listening and observation are key, as is providing structures within which there is room for participant experimentation and self expression. Helping those I work with to see themselves as creative individuals beyond a narrow and defined role as, for example, a patient or older person, is central to my ethos.”
